4 Top Tips for Switching to a Standing Desk

If you have recently switched to a height adjustable desk, there are some key things you can do to make the transition easier.

1. Take it Slow

Don't expect to suddenly go from a lifetime of sitting to standing all day. Your best option is to alternate sitting and standing every hour, to begin with. It takes on average about two weeks to be able to stand for hours on end. If you experience fatigue early on, don't be tempted to give up and go back to sitting all day. Your body will get used to it - just be sure to listen to your body and sit when your feet or legs start to become sore. Remember, start out slow and build up gradually. Remind yourself of the health benefits of a standing desk to keep on track.

2. Have Comfy Shoes Handy

Standing in heels all day is not going to be all that comfortable. Leave a comfortable pair of shoes by your desk which you can easily slip on when you plan to stand.

3. Invest in an Anti-Fatigue Floor Mat

Anti-fatigue mats are specially designed to accompany standing desks. The extra cushioning absorbs pressure away from knees, ankles, feet, and hips and means you'll be able to stand comfortably for longer periods of time.

4. Keep Posture in Mind

It can be easy to let bad habits slip-in when standing, such as hunching shoulders or not standing evenly on both feet - leaning to one side or not having both feet even and flat on the floor can be all too tempting. Try and imagine your head touching the ceiling. This will keep you standing straight with shoulders back.

Congratulations on your decision to switch to a healthier choice of standing up at work with a height adjustable desk. Just remember – take it slow, invest in a floor mat and maintain good posture, and your body and mind will thank you for it.
